'They're a selfish bunch': How Abu Dhabi shaped modern Manchester

At a foodbank ten minutes from one of the richest football clubs in the world, Niamh, a young woman in her 20s, has just lost her job. “I found out five minutes ago,” she says, standing behind a desk just inside the entrance to Feed My City in northeast Manchester. Run by a charity called the Manchester Sikh Foundation, Niamh was one of the few people employed by the foodbank, which depends on volunteers, two of whom are sitting down next to her as she tries to process the news. “The council refer people to us, but we don’t get any council funding,” she says, of Manchester City Council. “Anyone can come here and get a hot meal… But we are scrambling to keep afloat. I don’t know if we’ll survive.”
